The rivers and streams that feed the oceans surrounding Canada are the lifeblood of the nation. They give birth to the millions of salmon that migrate to the sea only to return and renew the cycle.

The river captured in this image provides spawning beds for thousands of salmon each year. It is also a destination for the many species that rely on the salmon for their survival. As summer fades into fall and the rain for which the west coast is famous begins to fall, the river swells and the salmon make a rapid dash to spawn before their lives end. It’s both beautiful and sad to witness, but it is absolutely essential to the coastal ecosystem that has evolved to support and depend upon them.
