As bears near hibernation they enter an annual phase called hyperphagia where they must consume copious amounts of food to store enough fat to survive through winter. Sows have the added responsibility of ensuring that their offspring not only eat enough for the impending season but also learn essential skills such as catching salmon that will greatly aid in their ability to sustain themselves for the rest of their lives. This mother exemplified maternal instincts, providing for her young cubs while monitoring for any perceived threats.
